What inspires a 29-year-old newlywed to quit his $ 80,000 a year bank job and invest his entire life savings into an idea he got from a passing bus ad?
For Nick Rizzi, inspiration struck in 2005, while feeling stuck behind his desk and watching the bank customers line up to cash their tax refund checks. It was then, he realized tax preparation services were an under saturated market. So when a bus passed him by advertising tax preparation courses, the proverbial light bulb went off and Rizzi decided to change his life forever. Rizzi wanted to become a tax franchisee, in an already established tax preparation franchise. After quitting his job and preparing taxes for a while, Nick could not find a franchise territory available in the communities he wanted to serve, nor was he able to mold their franchise concepts into what he desired. Not easily discouraged, Nick decided that he, himself, would create the brand in the locations he desired, while at the same time raise the bar on the already established competition. The idea of Smart Tax was born.
“It sounded like a pipe dream. I was a newly married man and my family was nervous.” Nick said, “I had a year-round job and was aspiring to trade it in to work a third of that time for more money, but, in return, I had to bare all the responsibility. Of course, people were skeptical”.
In 2005, through much hard work and determination, Rizzi opened the very first Smart Tax in Brooklyn, New York. The opening was a success, filing several hundred returns in its’ first year. During the off-season, Rizzi traveled, learned how to sail, and prepared to open three more locations the following tax season.
In Smart Tax’s second year, Rizzi’s locations netted double his prior year, and in year three, Rizzi opened two additional locations. He had several employees and quickly tripled the number of filed returns. Viewing his approach and systems as a success, Rizzi decided to franchise the concept in late 2009. Currently, there are over 26 Smart Tax locations nationwide.

Brooklyn franchisee Yvonne Murray agrees.
